Programs

There are a number of different components of Nature's Way Montessori School Farm.  Below, you can learn a little more about each program and how you can be involved.

Perennial Fruit

We have a number of different perennial fruits available at the NWMS Farm.  Perennial fruits provide a lot of structure to the farm so that it feels more "farm-like" and is guaranteed to produce something every year. Blueberry bushes were transplanted from a local farm during spring of 2018. Apple, pear, and fig trees that were all donated by NWMS families were planted in 2019. Additionally we have blackberries and strawberries, which were planted in 2018/2019.

Seasonal Produce

Annual produce such as tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, carrots, and radishes help students understand the life cycle of a plant.  Almost all of our seasonal produce is grown from seeds either in the classroom are out in the beds. The students participate in every step of the process from seed to fruit.

The Microeconomy

The Adolescent Community operates a small business, which we refer to as the microeconomy.  Farm produce, eggs, and other hand-made items are sold at our weekly Farm Stand to parents and students.  The students make all of the decisions for their business with the guides to help them. The money is then reinvested back into the business or used for other elements of the Adolescent Program as the students collectively choose.

Compost

Compost is a wonderful way for students to learn about how nutrients are cycled in nature.  All of Nature's Way students are taught to compost their food waste. Classroom compost containers are brought to the compost house (shown in the photo). The food scraps are then brought to the farm by adolescent students as a part of their community work. Finished compost is then used in the garden beds to act as a natural fertilizer.

Chickens

Nature's Way has a flock of chickens that provides eggs for the students to sell as a part of the microeconomy. The chickens are cared for by students and families from the school.

Bees

Our Bees are managed by the Burn and the Bees, a company established by a former NWMS staff member and her husband. Kellie and Aaron Burns help us educate our students about the importance of pollinators and the amazing world of bees!
